Harm Reduction: Overdose Prevention Summit

March 14, 2023

CSUF Resnick Student Union

The Zachary Horton Foundation sponsored a Harm Reduction: Overdose Prevention Summit in mid-March 2023. The Foundation collaborated with California State University, Fresno Nursing Department. The goal of the Summit was to change the discussion regarding addiction and recovery in light of the opioid epidemic and the fentanyl crisis.

The rate of overdose continues to increase every year and the loss of life has been staggering. The Summit included nationally known speakers with expertise in the field of substance use and addiction. The Summit provided education about substance use disorder (SUD) and several of the presenters shared their personal stories. The speakers provided their perspectives regarding recovery and harm reduction approaches aimed at saving lives. Please see the attached program document for additional information.

The Zachary Horton Foundation is an approved partner in the California Naloxone Distribution Project allowing the Foundation to provide free Narcan and training to the local community. Providing Narcan is one form of harm reduction and was available to those attending the Summit. In addition, fentanyl testing strips were also available to participants. The Fresno State Nursing program provided training as well as distribution.

The Summit took place at CSUF in the New Resnick Student Union. Approximately 220 individuals attended the event. Feedback on the Summit was overwhelmingly positive and ZHF plans to make this an annual event!
